In the course of a few weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing the public his intentions for a gilded ballroom twice the size than the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing to construct it.
He has committed acts countless times more severe – the existing assessment of casualties due to his slashing to international aid stands at 600,000 and rising, and recently an analysis predicted his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have risked – really, no other president would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the presidential residence in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with federal agencies.

As disorienting as it is to watch the leader try to upend the established notion about democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there is one large group among Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics close to half – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we were raised with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Essentially, they turned a figure of affection into an icon of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he criticized in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more gradually, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disturbing in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Savior that I grew up with, as conceptually the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and given that the quickly increasing segment among Americans could have minimal awareness of him since they are non-believers or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; however I believe that exist valuable insights of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly absolutely not the account of an authoritative monarch emerging; conversely, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a storage space, who must quickly flee to a different country to escape secret police. The infant develops in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his teaching concerns compassion for others, especially for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and protecting. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to turn the additional cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a means to instruct the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing is that if someone steals your outer garment you must offer them your pullover as well.
The evident and direct truth that Christ in biblical accounts requests a kind of radical love focused on the needy has consistently rendered Christianity something of a controversial faith: attractive to the populace, but owing to its natural unconventionality demanding to be restrained. In the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it practically blessed current circumstances.
A Conflict for the Best Among Us
So I have been inspired to observe the determined opposition against Trump develop during the previous year. It has been substantial consolation to assist in constructing the initiative that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated electorate to participate in large quantities during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags during all protests and appeals to the finest aspects within national heritage.
